Missions
Western Avenue Baptist Church believes in serving others through mission projects locally and abroad.
As a member of the Southern Baptist Convention, Western Avenue supports the Cooperative Program.
The Cooperative Program is an agreement among Southern Baptists churches, Baptist state conventions and fellowships, and the Southern Baptist Convention to work together in Great Commission ministries.
It is a financial channel of cooperation through which mission dollars are combined into a unified budget supporting the Southern Baptist missionary, education, and benevolent ministries in each state, the nation, and throughout the world.
The Cooperative Program makes it possible for individuals and churches to do something about fulfilling the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20) across the street and around the world.
Through the Cooperative Program, the mission of a single church is extended to ministries for the needy, the sick, the aged, and the lost, as well as the support of about 11,000 North American and international missionaries.
Each Southern Baptist church chooses what percentage of its undesignated offerings will be shared through the Cooperative Program.
Local Missions
The church maintains a food pantry to assist those who are in a financial crisis. Many have been helped with much needed groceries, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and laundry supplies during these difficult times. Please call the church office and make an appointment if you need assistance.
Food Pantry Hours: Tuesday's 10:30 am to 12:30 pm / Thursday's 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
A benevolence ministry is also a part of our mission effort. This program is administered by the pastor and deacons and has helped many individuals with prescription medicine, food, utilities, and other living expenses. This ministry is funded by a percentage of the Faith Missions Offerings received throughout the year and special benevolence offerings.
It is noted that presently the benevolence ministry is limited to Western Avenue Baptist Church members. The current financial conditions have overwhelmed this ministry.
Operation Christmas Child
People across the country are getting shoeboxes from home and filling them with small toys, school supplies, and other little gifts. These shoeboxes are sent to a needy child overseas along with Christian literature in his or her own language. What an opportunity to reach these children with a clear presentation of the Gospel!
Western Avenue serves as a Relay Center for Fayette county. If you are interested in volunteering at the collection booth during Collection Week, usually sometime in November, please contact the church office.
For more details about filling a shoebox, please pick up the Operation Christmas Child brochure at the church entrance We hope you will be a part of this exciting opportunity to share God's love with a hurting child.
